Once again, this year I shot the Governor's Challenge for Mr. James Simmons and the Wicomico County Tourism. As usual, I had an absolute blast and enjoyed spending the week after Christmas at the Wicomico County Youth and Civic Center with everyone from Wicomico County, DMV Elite and the high school athletes, coaches and staff from all over the region.
This year, schools were from as far away as as New York and Florida, and they even had a team from Europe participate in the DMV Elite Showcase games! The crew that put this year's holiday tournament together really worked their tail ends off and it showed by the quality of games that were put on for fans at the Civic Center.
There were some of the best high school athletes in some games including John Carroll standout Immanuel Quickley. Quickley is being recruited by nearly every basketball powerhouse college in the US! You name the college and they have most likely spoke to Quickley. Quickley has received scholarship offers from Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Arizona, Connecticut, Louisville, Washington, USC, Virginia Tech, Virginia, UCLA, Wake Forest, Central Florida, Providence, Cincinnati, Miami, Texas A&M, Depaul, UMBC and Rhode Island. He also has interest from Duke, Michigan St, Clemson, North Carolina, Ohio St, Syracuse, Texas, Villanova and Missouri, just to name a few! Quickley is listed on many of the major recruiting websites as the #1 Point Guard in the Nation! It is very easy to realize why he comes in such demand from the college level. Watching him play, he controlls the game and spreads the ball out, like a point guard should. He has very good game composure and ball handling skills that will help him at the next level of his career.
Another athlete with amazing talent this year was Legacy Charter School's Nicolas Claxton. Claxton played last year in the Governor's Challenge as well and I got to know a few guys on the team. Claxton has already committed to play college ball for the University of Georgia. Claxton received scholarship offers from Georgia, Arizona, Clemson, Florida St, Maryland, Notre Dame, Baylor, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, Memphis, USC, as well as interest from several others. Claxton is a 6'09 forward and is multi talented from outside and inside the paint. It will be very interesting to see Claxton get into Georgia and see if he further develops. With time, this kid could develop into a top talent in college basketball and beyond!
One of my personal favorites, mainly because I have photographed him in various level of ball is Keve Aluma. Aluma is a 6'08 Forward from right here on the shore at Stephen Decatur. Aluma fills my memory cards with dunks so of course, for that reason alone, becomes one of my favorite kids to shoot. This year, I noticed Aluma used a hook shot in the key and had success in Decaturs game against Bishop Sullivan. Aluma is committed to play for D-1 Wofford.
The list goes on and on of talented players from this year, definitely too many to list, and it is a great highlight of my career as a photographer to follow these kids from times like these, shooting hoops on the high school level, to following their careers into the next level and beyond.
